Applications are now open for Anglo American’s landmark Female Only Trainee Underground Miner Program at the Moranbah North mine, which is seeking motivated women who’d like to build a career in the mining industry.
Chief Executive Officer of Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business, Tyler Mitchelson, said successful applicants would join the organisation as Trainee Underground Miners and gain a Certificate II in Underground Coal Mining Operations over two years.
Anglo American developed the program and successfully pursued a decision with the Fair Work Commission to be able to specifically target women in recruitment advertising earlier this year.
“This program is the first of its kind for a Queensland underground coal mine, and a critical step toward creating a more inclusive environment for women in underground coal mining,” Mr Mitchelson said.
“We have been overwhelmed by the amount of interest in the program, with more than 1,000 Expressions of Interest received. It’s clear there is a real demand for these types of opportunities and we’re very pleased to formally open applications for the program.”
All applications who submitted Expressions of Interest have been contacted and encouraged to update their information as part of the formal application submission process.
A community information evening will be held on Tuesday 25 September at the Moranbah Community Centre (89 Mills Avenue, Moranbah) from 5.00 - 7.30pm to provide more information about the roles for interested applicants. Team members will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate safety equipment and other items used underground. Applications for the Program close 2 October 2018.
At the same time, Anglo American is continuing to invest in skills development for the region with applications also open for the company’s 2019 Apprenticeships Program at its Capcoal operations, near Middlemount.
The Capcoal Underground mine will take on six electrical and mechanical trade apprenticeships, and the Capcoal Open Cut mine is offering apprenticeships in diesel fitting, electrical trades and boiler making.
“We’re committed to supporting the development of skills across the region, and our apprenticeship and trainee programs are critical in creating those entry-level opportunities in the mining industry,” Mr Mitchelson said.
“At Anglo American, we’ve been ramping up our activity over the last 18 months which has also resulted in an increase in recruitment.
“That’s why we’ve renewed and increased our commitment to apprenticeship programs across the business. We want to make a real difference to local employment, and our apprenticeships and trainee programs are just one way we’re achieving that,” he said.
