Anglo American has donated $1 million to assist with the flood recovery efforts occurring across Queensland and New South Wales, including $500,000 to the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES), and $500,000 to the Australian Red Cross for their Queensland and New South Wales Flood Appeal.
CEO of Anglo American’s business in Australia, Tyler Mitchelson, said the $500,000 donation to the Queensland SES would meet SES needs for first aid kits and defibrillators for their vehicles across Queensland, as well as other operational equipment to assist with flood response and resilience.
“The devastation caused by recent rain and flooding events in Queensland and New South Wales has impacted the lives and livelihoods of our colleagues, their families and communities, and as a major Queensland employer, it’s important to us to support these critical flood recovery efforts.
“We want to recognise and support the SES with their incredible on-the-ground efforts to help Queenslanders.
“We are also providing direct assistance to our affected colleagues, including through paid leave and emergency funds up to $5,000 for emergency accommodation and other items,” he said.
The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service Assistant Commissioner for SES, Andrew Short AFSM, expressed appreciation for the generous donation from Anglo American.
"As we've seen over the past few weeks, SES volunteers have been instrumental in assisting affected Queenslanders through an incredibly difficult period because of extensive flooding. This donation will go a long way in providing more support to our dedicated volunteers and the wonderful service they provide Queensland communities, he said."
The donation builds upon the $300,000 provided by Anglo American to the Rural Fire Brigades Association of Queensland in 2020 to fund the purchase of 40 mop-up units used by volunteer firefighters in rural brigades across Queensland.
