Artwork from ten primary school students from across the Isaac region have been displayed on the back of 42 buses and roadside billboards as part of a Queensland Road Safety Week (August 16-20) campaign
The young artists won a competition launched by Road Safe Moranbah which challenged students from six local primary schools to create illustrations that promoted safe driving behaviour
Established in 2020, Road Safe Moranbah is working group aimed at coordinating emergency services and local industry to promote road safety awareness with a particular focus on driver fatigue – a serious issue facing road users in the region
The group’s founding members include mining companies Anglo American, BMA and BMC, resources bus operator Greyhound Resources and local emergency authorities including QPS, QAS and QFAS
The campaign generated 74 entries with the winning entries featuring on the rear of buses travelling to and from major mine sites as a constant reminder of the importance of road safety
Three designs will also be selected for display on billboards
Senior Sergeant Adam Dyer from Moranbah Police said the competition was a great initiative to raise awareness about the ‘Fatal 5’
“When it comes to road safety, literally every decision you make behind the wheel counts and this initiative is an ongoing reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Senior Sergeant Dyer said
Greyhound Resources General Manager James Smith said the company’s bus operation was in the perfect position to promote road safety among road users
“It is our responsibility to ensure mining and resources personnel get to and from work safely every day, and this is a great opportunity to use our bus fleet as ‘moving billboards’ to raise awareness about a topic that matters to everyone who shares the road,” Mr Smith said
General Manager of Anglo American’s Moranbah North Mine, Paul Stephan, said he recognised the importance of improving road safety in the Isaac region
“At Anglo American, we are intently focused on ensuring the safety of our people and our communities, and recognise that road safety, and preventing road accidents, is critical to doing this
We’re pleased to be supporting this initiative through Road Safe Moranbah, and hope it will have a positive impact on driver behaviour,” he said.
