Anglo American contributes $30,000 to agricultural education in Moranbah

03 December, 2020

Moranbah State High School (SHS) has received a $30,0000 grant from Anglo American towards upgrading its facilities for students studying agricultural science in years 9 to twelve at the Central Queensland school.

Agriculture and mining are Queensland’s two major primary industries and each sector plays an important role in the wider economy especially in regional Queensland.

Moranbah SHS’s Acting Principal Leigh Dyer thanked Anglo American for its ongoing support of the Moranbah community and said the funding would deliver an enhanced learning experience for the students.

“Our school aims to provide students with multiple career options and agriculture is an essential industry for Moranbah and the local economy. This donation from Anglo American has already contributed to improvements at our Agricultural Precinct which includes raised garden beds, a chook pen and a yarning circle for students to discuss ideas,” Ms Dyer said.

Anglo American’s Social Performance Manager Lynda Pollock said the company was committed to building better educational outcomes in mining communities under its Sustainable Mining Plan*.

“Diversified economies are critical to the regional communities where we operate, and this grant was a good opportunity for us to support the school and their students who are interested in a career in agriculture,” Ms Pollock said.

Last financial year Anglo American invested $2.83 billion with Queensland suppliers or 77 percent of total expenditure in Australia and paid $463 million in royalties to the Queensland Government. In 2019-2020, Anglo American supported more than 5,800 jobs and $1.28 billion on wages across Australia.
