Anglo American has today made a $200,000 donation to GIVIT to assist with the North Queensland flood recovery, following the recent and unprecedented flooding across the region.
Chief Executive Officer of Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business, Tyler Mitchelson, said the company was supporting recovery efforts through the donation to national not-for-profit GIVIT.
“The recent flooding across Northern Queensland has had a devastating impact on local communities, and we want to offer our support to those most in need,” Mr Mitchelson said.
“We extend our deep sympathies to the people who have lost their homes and had their livelihoods severely impacted.
“Our company, and our people, have strong ties to the region and it’s important to us to support those who are facing a daunting recovery.
“In working with GIVIT, we will ensure those who have been worst-affected can immediately access the items and services they need most, with 100% of the donation going to local residents and organisations.”
Mr Mitchelson also acknowledged the ongoing work of emergency services and the volunteer ‘Mud Army’ as part of the clean-up.
“Our sincere admiration and appreciation goes to Queensland’s emergency service workers and members of the ‘Mud Army’ whose work is truly a display of the Queensland spirit,” he said.
In Australia, Anglo American has five metallurgical coal mines in the Bowen Basin, including two near Middlemount, two near Moranbah and one near Moura. Anglo American also has exploration activity underway in North West Queensland.
As part of the Flood Appeal, GIVIT is working closely with local agencies, charities and community groups to identify needs within the community. They have partnered with Townsville City Council, Department of Communities, Lifeline, the Australian Red Cross, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society and a range of smaller neighbourhood centres and community groups.
