More than 5,000 workers across Anglo American’s operations in Queensland stopped for dedicated discussions on safety today (10 October), as part of the company’s Global Safety Day program.
Each year, Global Safety Day is marked on the same day around the world by every Anglo American work site, to highlight a universal commitment to best practice mining safety.
Chief Executive of Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business, Tyler Mitchelson, said the day was an important part of the company’s dedication to eliminating fatalities from across the business.
“Safety is our core value, and there is nothing more important than making sure every person goes home safely every day,” Mr Mitchelson said.
“Despite significant improvements, we still have not been able to eliminate fatalities from our industry. This is something we are focused on every hour of every day, and at every level or our business.
“Our annual Global Safety Day ensures that every Anglo American employee is united and aligned on safety.
“Our focus this year is ensuring there is no gap between what we say and what we do when it comes to safety. We are doing this by ensuring our Values always lead our decisions and actions – Safety, Care & Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Accountability and Collaboration.
“We have introduced a dedicated Elimination of Fatalities program in our business that is systematically addressing critical safety risks by drawing from best practice knowledge and safety innovations.”
Earlier this year, Anglo American undertook a full safety reset at all its sites as part of a broader initiative within the Queensland Mining Industry. More than 50 sessions were held with more than 5,400 people taking part.
Similar Global Safety Day sessions to those occurring in Australia will be taking place in Brazil, Botswana, Canada, Chile, China, Columbia, Finland, Namibia, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.
Anglo American is a leading global mining company, with significant investments within Australia and particularly in Queensland. The company operates five metallurgical coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, along with additional joint venture interests.
