Anglo American today announced the completion of the sale of its 88.17% interest in Drayton thermal coal mine and the Drayton South project to Malabar Coal Limited. Drayton mine has been in care and maintenance since mining activities ceased in 2016.
David Diamond, CEO of Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business, acknowledged the sale was the end of an era for Anglo American in the Hunter Valley: “Drayton mine has been in operation for over 30 years and Anglo American is proud to have owned and operated it for more than half of that period.
“Our people have been a part of the Hunter Valley community since Anglo American acquired the Shell Coal business, and with it Drayton, in 2000. It is with some sadness that we farewell the Hunter Valley community, however we are pleased that the mine infrastructure will support the new owners in continuing to provide economic benefits for the region.
“We would like to thank the Hunter Valley community for their years of support and partnership and we wish the new custodians of Drayton, and our employees who will stay on with Malabar Coal, the very best.”
