QUEENSLAND - Anglo American Coal Australia is pleased to announce its commitment to maintaining operations in Queensland and further investing in its communities, personnel and job creation.
In 2016, Anglo American announced its decision to divest of coal assets and exit the Australian market in an effort to reduce net debt and realign the balance sheet. Despite that decision, Anglo American Coal Australia maintained a commitment to continue safe and productive operations. By the end of 2016, Anglo American Australia had delivered its best all-round business performance in the Company's history.
"Our demonstrated restraint and resilience, compounded by a global commodities industry turnaround, has paved the way for Anglo American’s resurgence in Australia", said David Diamond, Country Head for Anglo American. "As we look to the future", continued Diamond, "Anglo American will build on its strong position as the third largest metallurgical coal producer globally and remain a major mining business and contributor to Queensland and Australia long into the future".
The announcement of permanence in Australia includes a plan to re-establish people development programs, focused on improving safety and operational standards, building organizational capacity and filling critical roles across the business. The Company will continue to invest long term in current employees, through internal moves and promotions, as well as focus on attracting new expertise and experience. Anglo American is committed to maintaining its role as a major employer offering long term career pathways and opportunities in the Queensland region.
In addition to job creation efforts, Anglo American Coal Australia is pleased to re-engage with local communities. As part of its commitment to the region, Anglo American recently invested $150,000 in local initiatives put forward by community leaders, including:
- Moura kindergarten and hospital support funding and also assistance with the Moura Miner’s Memorial
- Middlemount Youth Centre activities and programmes as well as the Middlemount Race Club event
- Funding the Queensland Music Festival Isaac Project that provides concerts with local entertainers
- Sponsorship for the CQ Rescue Service that does such a great job for our regional workers and their families
- Sponsorship to the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy Skills Camp, which conducts training and skill development sessions for our industry in the region
"Anglo American values its people and communities as a top priority," stated Diamond. "We are wholly committed to creating sustainable operations that provide value and make a positive impact in our communities."
