On 30 July Anglo American continued its proud tradition of celebrating Indigenous culture in our mining communities by bringing members of the much loved Brisbane Broncos Rugby League team to Middlemount for the annual Indigenous All Stars Vs Middlemount All Stars football match.
Star Broncos player Josh McGuire and Broncos Game Development Officers officially launched the match, which was held in recognition of National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) celebrations.
Community members and Anglo American employees came out to support the players, celebrate local Indigenous culture and meet their rugby league heroes.
Anglo American Community Officer Kiri Blanch said Capcoal and Foxleigh operations were delighted to bring the Broncos representatives to Middlemount for the match.
“The Indigenous All Stars Vs Middlemount All Stars match is a popular and important annual event in Middlemount and it was great to have a Broncos legend attend the game and give the players tips and advice,” Kiri said.
“We were very proud to acknowledge the strong culture and history of our Indigenous communities by marking NAIDOC with this special community event.
“Anglo American has a strong partnership and deep respect for the Traditional Owners of the land on which we operate, Barada Kabalbara and Yetimarala People, and this was a great opportunity to recognise the strong connection they have to this land.”
While in town the Broncos representatives also visited Middlemount Community School where they held a series of coaching clinics and motivational sessions with primary and secondary students and members of the Junior Panthers Rugby League Club.
Brisbane Broncos Game Development Manager Paul Dyer said the Broncos were delighted to maintain their partnership with Anglo American, which enabled them to visit the club’s loyal fans and attend special local events and celebrations.
“Our partnership with Anglo American is very important to the Brisbane Broncos as it provides us with the opportunity to travel to regional towns, meet our many loyal fans and share with them some of our experiences and coaching skills,” Paul said.
“We are honoured to have been able to support the Indigenous All Stars Vs Middlemount All Stars match and celebrate local Indigenous culture and history.”
Anglo American Communications Manager Vanessa Davies said the tour was part of Anglo American’s Regional Partnership with the Brisbane Broncos.
“Anglo American is delighted to join with the Brisbane Broncos and provide the Middlemount community with the opportunity to meet and learn from members of the much respected Brisbane Broncos,” Vanessa said.
“This tour has been particularly special as we have been able to bring the Broncos players out to celebrate NAIDOC with our local communities.”
As part of the three-day tour the Broncos also visited schools in Gindie, Springsure and Emerald, and attended the Anglo American Brisbane Broncos Interschool sports carnival in Clermont.
