Drayton team members pound the track at 10th annual Winery Running Festival

29 July, 2015

Anglo American’s Drayton mine helped the Hunter Valley community celebrate the 10th annual Winery Running Festival on Sunday 26 July as an official sponsor of the event which was held in the vineyards of Pokolbin.

Drayton assembled a strong contingent of competitors who joined more than 1800 local and international runners to compete in a variety of events including the half marathon and ‘winery 10km’ race.

More than 4000 spectators came along to watch the event and enjoy a range of festivities including entertainment, wine tasting, jumping castles and a Drayton South information stand where members of the community could find out about the new project.

Winery Running Festival Event Director Paul Humphreys said the success of the festival would not have been possible without the support of Anglo American and other local Hunter businesses that sponsored the event.

“Drayton provided financial and in kind support to help us stage a professional event with all the bells and whistles of a large city festival,” Mr Humphreys said.

“Drayton generously supplied awards for age category winners, great race kits for the kids and also had a range of give-aways for the spectators, which added to the festival atmosphere and overall success of the event.”

“It was also great to see a team of dedicated runners from Anglo American participating with great success in the event.

Stakeholder Engagement Manager Matt Frodsham said Anglo American was delighted to help support this important local event.

“As a major employer in the Hunter region, Anglo American is proud to support the hugely popular Winery Running Festival, particularly as the event celebrates 10 years,” Mr Frodsham said.

“From the ultra-marathon to the ‘winery wander’, this event caters for all athletes and we’re proud to have had a number of our employees take part in the event.”

Mr Frodsham said Anglo American was pleased to be supporting the official charity of the festival, Transplant Australia, and continue Drayton’s ongoing commitment to supporting local events, charities and community groups.
