On Friday 1 May Anglo American’s Callide mine will join local firefighters to host a community BBQ in support of the riders travelling through Biloela as part of the 2015 Bike 4 Burns charity ride.
Bike 4 Burns is an annual 800km charity bike ride established and run by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) to raise money to help support the work of the Centre for Burns and Trauma Research at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Anglo American Callide mine General Manager Clarence Robertson said the BBQ would provide an opportunity for the community to meet the riders and support crew after the first day of the ride while raising money for the Royal Children’s
Hospital.
“We are very proud to be sponsoring the BBQ, which will be a great way for the community to support the riders taking part in this gruelling seven-day bike ride,” Mr Robertson said.
“This is also a great opportunity to join with the Biloela firefighters to support the ongoing work of the Royal Children’s Hospital.”
Mr Robertson said in addition to donating $1000 to the ride, Anglo American was also proud to have one of its own Callide team members riding the 800km event, the first time a non-QFES rider has taken part in the whole ride.
Anglo American Callide Environmental Project Specialist Steven Voke will be riding as an ambassador in the event, which starts in Gladstone and travels through Biloela, Monto, Mundubbera, Murgon, Kenilworth and Caboolture before finishing in
Brisbane on Thursday 7 May at the new Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.
Mr Voke, who had already raised over $3,400 for the ride, said it was a great privilege to be taking part in the event, which had a particularly special significance to him.
“I received serious burns as a two-year old child in a kitchen accident and spent many weeks in hospital receiving treatment,” Mr Voke said.
“Recovering from burns often involves several operations and can take many years.
“While burns treatment has progressed markedly since my incident over 40 years ago, charity events such as Bike 4 Burns are so important to fund further research into treating children’s burns to ensure advances in treatment continue.
“I would like to give back to the system that once helped me to ensure that in the future, children with burns can receive the best treatment possible.”
Anglo American Callide Planning Superintendent Al Heit will also be completing the Gladstone to Biloela leg of the ride as a special guest rider.
