Anglo American’s Callide mine welcomes new apprentice intake for 2015

27 February, 2015

February saw four new apprentices welcomed to Anglo American’s Callide mine in Bilolela where they will spend the next four years learning their trades in the real world of mining.

Daniel Muller, Nicholas Cavanagh, Stuart Surman and Max Malone are local to the Callide Valley area and came to Anglo American through the ongoing and important partnership with the Gladstone Area Group Apprentices Limited (GAGAL). GAGAL operates through Central Queensland and across several Anglo American operating areas, focusing on providing and supporting apprenticeship opportunities for local individuals while meeting the needs of regional industries.

Callide’s Human Resources Manager Stephanie Oppermann said this year’s starters included two electrical and two mechanical apprenticeships with the apprentices working in both the field and workshop environments.

“Providing these placements is important for the business and the industry to ensure the necessary skills are available into the future, and Callide mine is the perfect training ground with a lot of highly skilled tradespeople to mentor these apprentices,” Stephanie said.

“We inducted these new apprentices in the first week of February, they then spent two weeks going through necessary block training on and off site and now they will commence the structured modules for their apprenticeships.

“I’d like to welcome the newest Callide team members and I hope they enjoy their learnings and the start of their careers with Anglo American,” Stephanie said.
