Anglo American helps inspire students’ passion for literacy through rugby league

Anglo American has helped Moranbah State High School students take a greater interest in reading and writing by sponsoring the school’s ‘Reading the Game’ initiative, a literacy program for Year 10 male students based around Rugby League. 


Grosvenor Human Resource and Training Superintendent Matt Norris said Anglo American was passionate about supporting local initiatives that support educational development opportunities in the community.

“Youth and education, and in particular literacy, has been the key focus for our sponsorship and donations program this year so we’re delighted to be able to support this project,” Mr Norris said.

“This is a great initiative and truly engages students by focusing on rugby league, which is something the students are very passionate about.”

Mr Norris said Anglo American’s support of the program included providing team shirts for students and staff for an excursion to Melbourne from 27 to 30 August.

Master Teacher at Moranbah State High School Beth Harlow thanked Anglo American for the continued support for the program, which was part of the school’s strategy to encourage students to take a greater interest in reading.

“Research shows that the fifteen year age mark is the time when most boys will disengage from reading and learning,” Ms Harlow said.

“Reading the Game is aimed at reengaging students in reading through a subject matter that they are interested in – Rugby League.

“We appreciate Anglo American’s sponsorship of our team shirts and their continued support for education in Moranbah.”
