Last week, over 300 Hunter Valley students and junior football players had the opportunity to meet star Brisbane Broncos players during a jammed-packed two day visit to one of Anglo American’s important mining communities.
During the two day visit, four high schools in Singleton, Aberdeen and Muswellbrook hosted star player Darius Boyd, former great Michael Hancock and development team members Paul Dyer and Fletcher Holmes. These four sportsmen sat down with students to
pass on important lessons on goal setting, what it takes to be successful, as well as sharing stories and experiences from their time at the Broncos.
Anglo American Communication Specialist Vanessa Davies said the trip was made possible through Anglo American’s regional partnership with the Broncos, now in its third year.
“Our regional partnership allows us to continue to visit schools in our Hunter Valley communities where 500 of our Drayton mine employees and their families live.
“We are 100 per cent committed to our operations in the Hunter Valley and to providing positive role models and motivation to school students.
“We are working hard for approval of our Drayton South project so we can continue to bring these fantastic sportspeople to the Hunter Valley and ensure our operations in the region bring positive benefits to the community,” Vanessa said.
Darius and the team also led a coaching clinic for the Denman Devils junior team where the youngsters were given pointers on passing, kicking, playing with confidence and looking out for their team mates.
Game Development Manager Paul Dyer said the Brisbane Broncos players and game development team were very excited to be able to visit regions like the Hunter Valley thanks to Anglo American.
“We recognise and value the work that goes on in communities like these and the importance of supporting junior sport,” Paul said.
“We’ve been able to speak with over 300 students who wouldn’t necessarily have the opportunity to meet first grade NRL players and we’ve come across some avid Broncos fans here in NSW.
“Healthy rivalry aside, we believe sport is an important aspect of any community and coaching the young players is something we thank Anglo American for supporting,” Paul said.
