Anglo American proud to support the new Deen City Skate Park in Aberdeen

16 January, 2015

Yesterday Anglo American was delighted to join with members of the Upper Hunter Shire Council and local community and attend the official opening of the Deen City Skate Park in Aberdeen.

Anglo American’s Stakeholder Engagement Stakeholder Engagement Specialist for the Hunter Valley, Matt Frodsham, has been involved in the skate park proposal for almost three years and said he was proud to attend the official opening to see the completed project.

“Anglo American got behind this project in early 2012 when we provided the Deen City Youth Club with a $10,000 donation to assist them with their fundraising efforts towards the construction of Aberdeen’s first skate park,” Mr Frodsham said.

This amount was added to the existing funding allocated by the Upper Hunter Shire Council towards the project. At the time, Anglo American had presented the cheque to one of Aberdeen’s many youths eagerly awaiting the skate park’s construction. The completed park includes a flat rail, grind rail, grind box and half pipe.

“We are thrilled to have been able to see this project from the early conceptual stages, through construction to its official opening and know the young people in this area will be extremely proud of the new skate park they had campaigned so hard to bring about,” Matt said.

“Anglo American was very pleased to provide funding towards this important piece of recreational infrastructure for Aberdeen as it reflects the real needs of the local people and responds to requests made by the young people of this town.

“Anglo American has been a part of the local area for 30 years through our existing Drayton mine and this is a solid example of the commitment we have for supporting local communities. This is the kind of support we hope to be able to continue should the Drayton South project go ahead,” Matt said.

“By contributing towards this landmark facility which will be much used and loved by the local people, Anglo American is demonstrating our social commitment to our local communities and providing our support to help them achieve their goals.

“The Deen City Youth Group should be very proud of the skate park and we look forward to seeing some ‘ollies’ and ‘rail stands’ in the years ahead,” he said.
