On Wednesday 7 October Dawson mine opened its doors to local school students and family members of employees and contractors for a special celebration to mark Anglo American’s Global Safety Day 2015.
Global Safety Day is Anglo American’s annual celebration of safety. It is marked around the word at every Anglo American site on the same day each year and stands to highlight our commitment to best practice mining safety.
Hundreds of Dawson’s visitors and employees took part in a range of hands-on activities and demonstrations on the day, which all focused on this year’s theme – Controls protect and keep us safe.
Visitors watched live emergency response exercises and participated in a series of interactive displays showcasing a range of critical controls in place at the mine including Blind Spot Monitoring, Collision Avoidance Technology, Control of Energy, Spill Containment and Confined Space.
School students had the chance to get up close to large mining equipment at a photo booth area and experience what it takes to safely maneuver a haul truck in a mining environment on Dawson’s training simulators.
Dawson General Manager Dave Palmer said the open day was a great opportunity for employees and contractors to share with their families and the community the mine’s unwavering commitment to safe production.
“At Anglo American, safety is our number one priority and Global Safety Day is an important day to stop, reflect and strengthen our commitment to Zero Harm,” Mr Palmer said.
He said the interactive displays demonstrated some of the safety controls and world-leading technologies, training and innovations Anglo American had invested in to ensure everyone is kept safe at work.
“We wanted to show the community the important work being done to ensure we have the right controls in place to prevent serious incidents from occurring so that we can all go home safely to our loved ones every day,” Mr Palmer said.
“Dawson mine undertakes significant work to constantly identify, review and monitor our critical controls and we’re committed to ensuring that every one of our team members works together every day to ensure these controls are implemented and effective.”
Mr Palmer thanked the workforce and local community for coming along and actively participating in the activities to make the event a great success.
