Anglo American’s Callide mine has proudly donated $4950 to help the recovery effort at Thangool State School, south of Biloela, which received extensive damage after Cyclone Marcia tore through the region in February.
More than 80% of the school’s library books and teaching resources were destroyed and classrooms were left ruined in the wake of the cyclone.
Thangool State School Principal Michael Nielsen said the support and donation from Anglo American had been critical in helping to relieve the pressure on teachers, staff and community members who had been working tirelessly to get the school reopened.
“Anglo American approached me straight away to find out how they could help in the recovery,” Mr Nielsen said.
“We are so pleased with the support we have received from Callide and very thankful for the generous donation.”
Mr Nielsen said the donation would be used to resource the library and replace the teaching resources that were damaged.
90% of the school’s buildings were impacted by the flood, with an inch of mud covering classrooms, the library, administration building, sheds, multi-purpose court, tuckshop and the sports room.
“The clean-up was extensive, however we had great support from the community including the local SES and a number of local businesses, which helped ensure the school was back up and running after just one week.”
Callide mine General Manager Clarence Robertson said Anglo American was pleased the donation would help the school replace the critical resources lost in the flood.
“The floods had a significant impact on the region and it was important for Anglo American to provide support to help the school clean up, rebuild and open its doors to students as soon as possible,” Mr Robertson said.
“A special thank you to Stakeholder Engagement Officer Phil Casey for coordinating our involvement and working with the school to ensure they received the support required.”
