Drayton donation helps boost cancer services in Muswellbrook

01 April, 2015

In a generous show of support for local cancer support programs, Anglo American's Drayton mine has made a $10,000 donation to the Cancer Council NSW's Muswellbrook Relay for Life event held over the weekend.

More than 500 locals set up camp at the Weeraman Oval in Muswellbrook on Saturday, with 20 teams participating in the relay-style overnight walk to help raise vital funds for the Cancer Council's research, prevention and support services.

Cancer Council's Upper Hunter Community Relations Coordinator Glen Parsons said he was delighted with the generous donation and support from Anglo American.

"This donation will go towards helping the local community in reducing their risk of cancer through prevention talks in businesses and local communities," Mr Parsons said.

"The money will also help those local community members going through a cancer experience with supportive care services, help our volunteers in their advocacy campaigns and assist our researchers in their continuing work locally in the Hunter."

Mr Parsons said major financial input from corporate organisations was paramount to ensure the continuing work of the Cancer Council NSW.

"We have an array of businesses in the community that support us, with mining being at the forefront of that support," Mr Parsons said.

"We thank Anglo American for their support this year and welcome any further involvement the Cancer Council can have with their workforce to help reduce their risk of this disease."

Human Resources Manager Karine Williams said she was delighted to be able to support the Cancer Council and get behind this community event to help raise money and awareness for cancer services, especially in view of the fact that many employees and their families are either cancer survivors or currently receiving treatment.

"We are delighted to be making this donation to Muswellbrook Relay for Life, an event which has been an important part of our community for nine years," Ms Williams said.

"Drayton mine is committed to supporting the communities in which we live and operate, and we are proud to be able to support the important work undertaken by the Cancer Council in our community."

Ms Williams said the donation came about as a result of the very successful Drayton South Community BBQ held in Singleton last week, where Anglo American donated more than $24,000 for local charities on the day.

The next community BBQ will be held on Saturday 18 April at Simpson Park, Muswellbrook, in partnership with the Upper Hunter Community Services.
