Anglo American hosts the Brisbane Broncos in Moranbah and Mackay

07 October, 2014

This week Anglo American has continued its proud tradition of providing regional Queenslanders with the chance to meet some of the biggest names in rugby league by kicking off a three day visit to Moranbah and Mackay with the Brisbane Broncos.

Game development team members Paul Dyer, Fletcher Holmes, Simon Vavega and former Australian rugby league international Michael De Vere together with current Broncos star players Jarrod Wallace and Ben Barba will join Anglo American to visit schools, the local football club and community groups across Moranbah.

Anglo American Corporate Communication Manager Jacqui Strambi said Anglo American had an action packed tour planned for Moranbah on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of Anglo American’s annual Regional Partnership with the Brisbane Broncos, before the Broncos representatives continued on to Mackay on Thursday.

“Our Regional Tour Program with the Brisbane Broncos allows us to bring the game development team and star players to our proud mining communities, where local kids and Broncos fans of all ages get the chance to get up close and personal with their rugby league heroes,” Jacqui said.

“This is the fourth year in a row Anglo American has been the Brisbane Broncos’ Regional Partner and as a major employer in the region, we are particularly excited to bring members of the much loved team to Moranbah to share the benefits of mining with local people.

“We have so much activity underway through our existing Moranbah North mine as well as our Grosvenor project which produced its first coal two weeks ago, so it’s a great opportunity to stop by and say thank you to the community for all their support,” she said.

“A key part of the tour will be visits to primary and high schools in Moranbah, where the Broncos team will host coaching clinics and speak to students about the importance of healthy living, goal setting and performing at their peak.

“While in Moranbah, the Broncos will visit our $1.95 billion Grosvenor project and speak to the team helping us build this world-class brand new underground mine,” Jacqui said.

In addition to conducting school visits in Moranbah, the Brisbane Broncos will continue their support of grassroots junior rugby league by conducting a skills clinic at the Moranbah Miners Junior Leagues Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Paul Dyer said he was looking forward to returning to Central Queensland over the next two days to catch up with the many Broncos fans and rugby league supporters.

“Moranbah and Mackay are synonymous for producing some of the country’s most gifted rugby league players, including this week’s tour member and Broncos player Ben Barba, who called this area home when he launched his football career,” Paul said.

“The Brisbane Broncos values our regional partnership with Anglo American as it provides us with the opportunity to catch up with many of the junior players across the state with a genuine passion for our great game.”
