Today Anglo American and members of the Brisbane Broncos travelled to picturesque Warwick to celebrate the long awaited netball and rugby league finals of the Southern Downs Challenge.
Brisbane Broncos Game Development Manager Paul Dyer said the Brisbane Broncos were delighted to see the Anglo American Brisbane Broncos Regional Partnership now in its fourth year.
“We value our regional partnership with Anglo American and this annual tour to Warwick provides an opportunity for the Brisbane Broncos to support rugby league and netball in the region and see first-hand some great games in the school finals”, Paul said.
“It’s wonderful seeing high school students from Warwick, Goondiwindi, Assumption College, Allora and Killarney battle it out to win the prized rugby league shield.
“The Southern and Darling Downs region is renowned for producing rugby league stars such as Andrew McCullough, Ashley Taylor and Brisbane Broncos legend Michael Hancock, who we are thrilled to have with us here today,” Paul said.
Australian international and State of Origin veteran Michael Hancock said he was looking forward to watching Stanthorpe State High compete in all three netball finals at Barnes Park and in the 2pm rugby league final against the combined Inglewood-Texas-St Joseph’s Stanthorpe team at Suburbs Junior Rugby League ground.
“Stanthorpe was a big part of my childhood and with my family still living in the region, this area of Queensland will always be like home to me,” Michael said.
“I’m looking forward to presenting the winning teams with their Anglo American Brisbane Broncos prize packs and giving the students some game day advice,” Michael said.
Communication Coordinator Jackie Noble said more than 600 students from high schools scattered across the Southern Downs participated in the Anglo American Brisbane Broncos Southern Downs Challenge.
“Similar to other rural areas of Queensland where job opportunities are limited, Southern Downs’ school leavers are thinking about their future career prospects in the mining industry, so it’s not surprising this visit receives great attention in Warwick each year,” Jackie said.
“The mining industry offers fantastic opportunities for both men and women and it’s exciting to see all students, but in particular young women, become more aware of Anglo American’s career possibilities and interested in applying for one of our many career programs,” Jackie said.
Brisbane Broncos Game Development Manager Paul Dyer said the Brisbane Broncos are thrilled about the success of the regional partnership with Anglo American.
“Our Regional Partnership program is all about working with Anglo American in regional communities, giving children access to our players and legends and building grassroots rugby league,” Paul said.
