Callide mine supports Rotary Careers Market

02 July, 2014

Last week Callide mine employees attended the Rotary Careers Market at the Biloela Civic Centre where they got to know a crowd of almost 800 local students from our local communities interested in learning more about future opportunities in mining.

HR Superintendent Stephanie Oppermann said every year Callide maintains an active role in the community through in-kind support and volunteering for speaking opportunities, where our employees share their skills, knowledge and pass on advice.

"Despite the challenging market conditions we are currently experiencing, we know the cycle will eventually improve and we will continue to need skilled workers," Stephanie said.

"There are lots of mixed messages in the public at the moment about the future of mining. We were pleased to set up an information stand at the careers market to help address misconceptions – we need to be clear we are here for the future so we keep people interested in mining jobs.

"It's important we continue to promote the mining industry as a positive career option for these young people who will potentially be our future employees.

"We want to help local people understand the options they have to develop skills, take advantage of employment opportunities and fulfil their true potential.

Callide was delighted to send along our Training Officer Rebecca Job and Learning and Development Officer Melissa Brand to the careers market to provide attendees with some tips about future study options and outline the diversity of work available in our industry.

Melissa said she received a range of questions while looking after the Callide information stand, from students wanting to understand what they needed to do "to work in your position" to the qualifications required to operate "the big trucks".

"A lot of the students have family members that work out here and were very eager to hear how the mine works, where we send the coal and what type of coal we produce. They seemed very excited to be able to go home and tell their parents what they learned," Melissa said.

Career market coordinator Tom Hosking said he thanked Anglo American for attending the market.

"We were very pleased to have 720 students attend the event as well as 20 exhibitors and 80 support staff, who together, brought valuable information to the students from our region," Tom said.

"Anglo American has been a great supporter of the event since its inception more than ten years ago and we look forward to this relationship continuing in the years ahead," he said.
