Callide mine’s Hitachi Euclid EH4500 haul truck gained plenty of attention last month when it rolled out of the maintenance area with a freshly painted bright pink tray aimed at promoting cancer awareness, early detection and raising funds for valuable research.
Mining manager Tony Power said when the 280 tonne capacity truck was due for a fresh coat of paint, it provided the perfect opportunity to make a bold pink statement that would get employees talking about health and raising funds in the fight against cancer.
“Tragically cancer has touched many Callide employees, their families and friends, and we all recognise funding cancer research is the key to understanding and finding a cure for this insidious illness,” he said.
The Cancer Council Queensland will be the beneficiary from the ‘pink truck’ campaign with Callide mine donating $1 for every production hour the ‘pink truck’ completes in 2013, up to its expected performance of 5000 hours.
“Many Biloela residents access the valuable support services provided by Cancer Council Queensland and Callide mine is proud to assist this highly respected organisation.
“While the colour pink is usually associated with breast cancer awareness and fundraising, money raised from our ‘pink truck’ production performance will support people suffering from a variety of cancers, including prostate cancer which current estimates indicate approximately 22,000 men are living with advanced prostate cancer in Australia today.
“Other workforce health awareness campaigns will take place throughout the year at Callide, including the increasingly popular men’s health awareness activity ‘Movember’,” Tony said.
Special thanks to Mechanical Engineer Peter Grimes and third year Mechanical Engineering student and co-op employee Philomena O’Rourke for co-ordinating the build and make-over for Callide mine’s ‘pink truck’.
