Today Anglo American kicked off a two day regional schools and skills clinic tour to Muswellbrook and Denman with members of the much revered Brisbane Broncos rugby league club.
Anglo American Branding and Events Coordinator, Jackie Noble said the visit to the Hunter Valley would provide students with the opportunity to meet with NRL stars and hear firsthand messages on living a healthy and active lifestyle and what it takes to succeed before and after school.
“With our regional partnership now in its third year, it’s extremely important for us to continue to visit schools in our Hunter Valley communities, where 500 of our Drayton mine employees and their families have made their homes for than 30 years” Jackie said.
“Similarly we want to be able to provide high school students with advice on career options after school with our award winning apprentice program, vacation work and graduate program.
“As we progress with plans to develop the Drayton South replacement mine, we will continue to employ local people, show the same commitment to our local suppliers and support the community.
“Our regional partnership reinforces this commitment as we bring the Brisbane Broncos stars to meet the children who live in the Hunter Valley near our Drayton mine,” Jackie said.
As part of the visit, Broncos legend, five time grand final winner Michael Hancock, principal player and origin representative Matt Gillett, joined with Broncos Game Development Manager Paul Dyer and Game Development Officers to visit St Joseph’s Primary, Denman Public School and Muswellbrook High school.
“I grew up in Stanthorpe, a small country town called near the New South Wales border and as a young winger playing football, I would have loved to have received a visit from first grade rugby league players and get some playing tips from them” Michael said.
“So along with Matt, who also went to school in a small town called Caboolture, we are very happy to be able to give back to regional children and pass on some of our skills and messages,” he said.
A skills clinic at Denman Sandy Hollow Junior Rugby League club will take place Monday afternoon where the players and game development team will take juniors through ball skills and game tactics.
Game Development Manager Paul Dyer said, “The Brisbane Broncos players and my game development team are very excited to be able to visit regions like the Hunter Valley thanks to Anglo American”.
“We recognise and value the work that goes on in communities like these and the importance of supporting junior sport”, Paul said.
