While much of the country is looking forward to watching Australia’s gold medal wins at this year’s London Olympics, Anglo American has got off the mark early by announcing a three yeargold sponsorship agreement with Aberdeen’s popular Highland Games, starting with this year’sevent to be held on 7 and 8 July.
Anglo American Stakeholder Engagement Specialist, Matt Frodsham said Anglo American wasdelighted to be a major sponsor of the Highland Games for the next three years.
“Since its inception in 2000, Aberdeen’s Highland Games weekend has gone from strength tostrength which in no small part is due to the dedication and hard work of committee members, aswell as the growing number of followers the Games attract each year,” Matt said.
“Anglo American is proud to partner with the Aberdeen community to celebrate the rich Scottishhistory and culture that is evident in the naming of many nearby towns, including Scone andMuswellbrook,” he said.
Highland Games President Barrie Lawn said this year’s event would see 23 events taking placeat three venues around Aberdeen, along with stalls providing food and displays representinglocal as well as traditional Celtic culture and recreation.
“Thanks to Anglo American’s long term support, the Games organising committee can now focuson staging an even more impressive weekend celebrating all things Scottish,” Barrie said.
“Our Games attract bands, Clans, dancers, heavy events and state and school tug-of-war teamsfrom Sydney and regional New South Wales to the one gathering where the Celtic history of theUpper Hunter is celebrated.
“Even though our town is small in size we are immensely proud of our history,” he said.
The Highland Games conclude the Scottish Australia Heritage Council's Heritage Week which commences in Sydney on 22 June 2012.
