Anglo American today partnered with the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) andorganisational culture consultancy, Diversity Partners, to host a special Women in Mining andResources Queensland (WIMARQ) event featuring key note speaker and world expert onunconscious bias, Professor Binna Kandola.
More than 100 representatives from across the Queensland resources industry gathered atthe Stamford Plaza to hear from Professor Kandola and learn ways to understand andeliminate unconscious bias.
Head of Human Resources for Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business, Mr DavidDiamond, said he was delighted to welcome Professor Kandola to Brisbane as he shared hisinsights on ways to overcome unconscious bias and build a successful organisational culturebased on inclusion and diversity.
“As a global business, Anglo American is building a workplace where we embrace the realmeaning of global - differing nationalities, religious beliefs, thinking styles, gender, ethnicity,age and ability,” Mr Diamond said.
“Anglo American has the most attractive growth strategy compared to any other coal company,but we are still faced with ever increasing challenges to attract people to deliver this growth.“In terms of attracting talent, we need to increase the size of the pool by allowing more peoplethe opportunity to enter and remain in the industry, which is why it is really important for us tounderstand why unconscious bias exists and recognise it in our behaviours to ensure we arenot missing out on new opportunities or great people.
“The mining industry has come a long way from its traditional male dominated roots, which hasbeen reflected by the growing representation of women in senior roles and improved workingconditions.
“As a multiple award winner at the QRC’s Resources Awards for Women, we want to bringeven more women into our business,” Mr Diamond said.
The Queensland Government announced it had granted Anglo American’s Mining Lease for its$1.7 billion Grosvenor underground longwall mine in Moranbah on 8 June.
With construction now underway, early next year Anglo American will be looking for peoplefrom a range of backgrounds and varied levels of experience to operate the mine.
“We will also be increasing gender balance by encouraging more women to consider availablepositions,” Mr Diamond said.
At the WIMARQ event, Professor Kandola shared his thoughts with participants on thefollowing topics:
- Advice and practical techniques to reset diversity strategies and overcome prejudices andhabits that prevent organisations reaching their diversity goals;
- An understanding of what UK employers have been achieving;
- Skills and tools to attract and retain a diverse workforce in Australia and Asia; and
- Strategies to promote diversity of background, experience, gender, age and culture atboard, executive, partner and management levels.
“Our ability to take Professor Kandola’s deeper understanding of these challenges and becomemore creative, inclusive and flexible in the way we attract, develop and retain our workforce willhelp us be an even better business,” Mr Diamond said.
