Anglo American Metallurgical Coal’s Callide Mine has generously donated $12,000 to the Callide Dawson Special Needs Support Group Inc (CDSNSG) to help them fulfil their plans to expand existing facilities at the Community Resource Centre.
The Callide Dawson Special Needs Support Group Inc was established in 2005, to support adults and children with disabilities within the Banana Shire region, enabling these families to remain, and actively participate in a community where their needs can be locally met.
Last year, 532 users including schools, teachers, individuals and families accessed the Community Resource Centre for resources and assistance.
Callide Mine human resources representative Mandy Milner said Callide Mine responded to a sponsorship request from the special needs group earlier in the year, requesting support for sourcing new equipment appropriate for older youth.
“Although the centre has an established and safe covered playground with excellent equipment for children aged 10 years and under, there is currently no equipment catering to older adolescents,” Mandy said.
“Funding was granted as the initiative aligned with Anglo American Metallurgical Coal’s sponsorship priorities, targeting the improvement of health and education facilities and services in its areas of operation.
“Anglo American’s Callide Mine is proud to present a $12,000 cheque to improve the facilities at the Resource Centre for the older children,” Mandy said.
With the funds donated by Callide Mine, the group plans to build a playground for children aged between 10 and 16, to include:
- A half-court basketball court, which may incorporate volleyball as well;
- Tethered soccer balls and tennis;
- Swings;
- Climbing cargo net and wall; and
- A retreat area or sensory garden.
CDSNSG representative Lauren Caught said both the committee and the children were very grateful Anglo American’s Callide Mine could help them achieve their plans for the centre that supports the local community.
“The donation will be put to very good use at the community resource centre and greatly appreciated by all,” Ms Caught said.
“It’s wonderful to see a global company like Anglo American looking after the local community,” she said.
