Anglo American Metallurgical Coal’s (AAMC) Dawson Mine today took delivery of the first of its new fleet of 14 Komatsu 830E trucks, the first electric drive trucks to be introduced at the mine.
To celebrate the launch, Australia’s V8 Supercar Champion, Jamie Whincup, travelled to Dawson along with a 888 racing car as a special guest of Komatsu, to assist in the handover ceremony.
Dawson Mine General Manager Brett Thompson said the new Komatsu trucks would offer increased reliability at Dawson, aligned with an AAMC initiative to reduce unplanned maintenance and increase the availability of its truck fleet.
“We anticipate the new AC drive trucks, which by their nature have fewer moving parts, will require less time under maintenance, assisting Dawson in our drive to increase productivity as demand for our products increase,” Brett said.
“We have four trucks already completely assembled on site, two currently under assembly and another five close to being delivered to site from Mackay.
“The whole fleet is expected to be in operation by mid-July.
“These trucks, each with a carrying capacity of 210 tonnes will play a pivotal role in the movement of waste material across the mine and complement our focus on increasing efficiencies and business improvement across the Anglo American Group,” Brett said.
Following the presentation, Dawson management arranged for Jamie Whincup to travel to Moura State Primary and High schools to meet with students, giving them the chance to view the 888 racing car while he spoke to them about the importance of road safety.
