We are a leading, global mining company

With significant operations in Queensland, Australia. Anglo American is the world’s third largest seaborne exporter of steelmaking coal. We have two open cut and three underground steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, along with additional joint venture interests and growth projects.

Operation: Aquila

The Aquila underground steelmaking coal mine is located near Middlemount, in Central Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Aquila Mine has been developed as one Australia’s most technologically advanced underground mines, leveraging Anglo American’s advancements in underground automation technology, remote operations and data analytics.

The mine features two longwalls, allowing us to operate without the downtime that is usually required for longwall moves. Both longwalls are fully remote capable, and can be sequentially operated from our site-based remote operations centre on the surface of the mine.

Aquila is jointly owned by Anglo American and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd, with Anglo American as the managing company.

Operation: Capcoal

The Capcoal complex consists of the Capcoal Open Cut and Aquila Underground mines, near Middlemount, in Central Queensland's Bowen Basin.

Together these mines produce quality steelmaking coal for export steel markets. The majority of coal is mined from the German Creek Formation, which contains five coal seam intervals known as the German Creek, Corvus, Tieri, Aquila and Pleiades seams. Mining leases controlled by Capcoal cover 33,513 hectares.

Capcoal plays an important role in the town of Middlemount, supporting community events and assisting with the provision of important services.

Operation: Dawson

Dawson Mine is an open cut steelmaking coal mine operation made up of three operating pits – North, Central and South. It commenced operations in 1961 and is one of the oldest coal mining operations in Central Queensland. Dawson Mine was the first mine in Australia to export coal to Japan in 1961 and was the first mine to introduce draglines into its operation in 1963.

Anglo American acquired its interest in the mine in May 2002, as part of an alliance with Mitsui. Dawson Mine is a joint venture between Anglo American (51%) and Mitsui Holdings (49%), and is operated by Anglo American.

Operation: Moranbah North

Moranbah North is an underground longwall mine which began operating in 1998. Moranbah North's steelmaking coal is mined from the Goonyella Middle Seam mainly for export to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, India, Brazil and European countries.

Moranbah North is 88% owned by Anglo American, with the remaining 12% owned by joint venture partners.

Moranbah South is a joint venture project with Exarro, which you can find out more about in the ‘Projects’ section.

Operation: Grosvenor

The Grosvenor underground steelmaking coal mine produced its first longwall coal in May 2016. The site is located in Moranbah, approximately 190 kilometres south-west of Mackay.

Following a localised ignition at Grosvenor Mine on 29 June 2024, the operation is now in a project phase.

A dedicated team is now on site focused on maintenance and ongoing sealing activities with all atmospheric monitoring still trending positively.

Project: Moranbah South

Moranbah South is a future 50% joint venture project between Anglo American and Exxaro in Central Queensland, south of our Grosvenor project. In mid-2014 we received the draft environmental approval from the Queensland Government and in November 2014 we received approval from the Australian Federal Government.

The resource consists of high quality steelmaking coal and the project would involve developing a brand new underground longwall operation.

Exploration

Anglo American currently has two discovery projects in North West Queensland and one discovery project in Western Australia, with early stage project generation activities across the country.

Discovery activities in Australia are targeting critical energy-transition materials with a focus on copper.

In Queensland, Anglo American has been working with the Pitta Pitta and the Maiawali traditional owner groups to undertake cultural heritage activities in the area, as part of our cultural heritage agreements currently in place with both groups.
